Wood County Schools is again offering a damage waiver program for student iPads. The program allows families to pay an upfront fee at the beginning of the school year which reduces the cost of repair and replacement of the iPad of those enrolled. Families can buy in one student for $30 or pay $60 for a family plan, which includes 2 or more students. If a family paid for the damage waiver last year and did NOT have a claim, that payment is rolled over into this year and the family is automatically enrolled again. If a family paid for the damage waiver last year and DID have a claim, they can buy back in to the program by filling out and paying for a new damage waiver. The program does require a student ID number. Contact your child’s school if you do not know their student ID number. Visit our payment portal to purchase. https://woodcountyschoolswv.com/payment

The United State Senate Youth Program (USSYP) annual selection process has begun. This is an extremely competitive merit-based program that brings two high school students (juniors and seniors) from every state for an intensive week-long study of the federal government and its leaders. Each student will receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship with encouragement to continue coursework in history, government and public affairs. To access all the information and the link to the pre-qualifying questionnaire go to the following link: https://wvde.us/middle-secondary-learning/social-studies/student-programs/

They will provide overlays for you to wear and will come at cheaper rate. If interested, please come dressed appropriately and we will announce when to go. You can order them later if you like them.

As a reminder there is no school tomorrow due to Labor Day. See you Tuesday!

Academy Day is an opportunity for students, parents, and school officials to ask questions and obtain information regarding the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy as well as the ROTC scholarship process. No Registration Required.
Students who want to attend a prestigious U.S. Service Academy are generally more successful when they begin planning courses and extracurricular activities early in their academic career. Please see the schedule included.

Starting at this Friday’s home football game, no one will be allowed to bring a backpack into the stadium. If you attend professional or college games or concerts, this is a very common practice. We need keep our environment as safe as possible and this step in safety helps!

This is Kenny DeMoss, Principal of Parkersburg High School, with some important information for parents and students. Two things I want to discuss are appointments and tardies. We have a very strict tardy policy at PHS. Teachers now assign a 15 minute lunch detention for every tardy to class. With that in mind, please encourage your student to be on time. When I was in school here over 30 years ago, we only had 5 min in between classes to get to the next class. Things have not changed. It is still the same amount of distance from class to the other now as it was back then. Just like a job, if you are late, there are consequences. We are trying not only to educate your children, but also prepare them for life. We go to school for 8 hours, most people typically work for 8 hours. You get a lunch break when you work, so do the students. You have to meet expectations at work in order to be compensated. At school, you have to meet expectations in order to see the compensation, aka grades and a high school diploma. Please help us out.
If your student has an appointment during the school day, there are two ways to handle this situation. The first way is to park in the horseshoe, come in the school, we call the student down, and you sign them out. The second way, the preferred way, is to send a note in the morning stating you have an appointment at, for example, 10am. You also include in the note that you will pick them up at 930 in this situation. Your student then brings that note to student services before 8am and we will give them a PINK SLIP in its place. That PINK SLIP allows the student to just walk out of class and out the door to your car. In both situations, make sure you bring a note back from the appointment so the absence can be excused medically. As you can tell, the second way is the preferred way and makes everything much simpler.
We have had a great start to the school year, and we appreciate your reinforcement of our expectations. Thank you and have a good evening.

West Virginia law enacted on June 6 states that the West Virginia DMV no longer requires proof of enrollment for students to get their learner’s permits. All you will need to do is go to the DMV with proper documentation (birth certificate and proof of residence) for your child to have the ability to take their learner’s permit.

Senior panoramic picture will be taken at 8 AM tomorrow in the stadium. Please report to the stadium before you go to first period and do not be late!

Parking spots for Juniors will go on sale Monday, August 29th, on a first come, first serve basis. Spots are $50 and can be paid for in the Finance Office (library) before school (7:30-8), after school (3:10-3:30) and during your lunch. In order to purchase a spot, your paperwork needs to be complete. That paperwork can be obtained from the Admin office. Any questions please see Mr. Lawrence.

Wood County Schools' internet provider has a fiber line down between Charleston and Parkersburg. Their crews are on site and there is no ETA on when the line will be repaired. With that being said, there is a possibility that the internet may be out tomorrow at all WCS locations if the line is not repaired in time. Details will be shared as soon as we get them.

Tutoring and credit recovery is available in the first floor computer lab starting after school today. It will be M-Tr 3:30-5:30.

This is a message from Parkersburg High School. Monday & Wednesday is picture day this week starting with 9th and 10th tomorrow. I just wanted to follow up today with some updates. Thank you for a wonderful first day of school! Students were super polite and patient as we worked on getting schedules fixed and getting everyone to their correct classes. First of all, I do want to remind all students that you’re not to be in the parking lot outback at any time except for when coming to and leaving school. Failure to follow this could result in your parking privilege being revoked. Also, I forgot to mention today in our upper classmen assembly, that earbuds and headphones and those things that Bluetooth to your phone or iPad cannot be used unless it’s in class and for an educational purpose or you may use them at lunch. Also, after some further thought, during your lunchtime you may use your phone in the hallway. The Jack Stephens Gym will be shut down until further notice during lunch. During lunch you may go out front, outback in the picnic area, in the cafeteria, or outside the library. When going out front you must sit or be near the picnic tables for supervision purposes. Also, as a reminder, you’re not allowed to leave campus for lunch. Parents please fill out your student's Online AUP so they can get their iPad as soon as possible. With that in mind, we will not be handing out iPads to Seniors tomorrow due to the lack of response of online authorization for you to use and get the iPad. Again, if your schedule is not complete please make sure you make your way down to student services so that you can have your schedule fixed. We know the line was long today, but that is a typical thing for the first day of school. Parents if you are driving your student to school as you can tell the traffic pattern unfortunately is very slow. We have people on duty as early as 7 o’clock in the morning and your student can come to school well before 8 AM. I appreciate everyone’s cooperation and having the first day of school being a fantastic one and we look forward to finishing out the week by wearing red on Friday. That is a long-standing tradition at PHS. Thank you and have a wonderful evening.
